Straits Times Reimagined
Improving the user interface and experience of Singapore's leading news app.
Scope
︎ Digital ︎ User Interface Design ︎ User Research
Year 2020
Completed at Temasek Polytechnic
Based on Singapore’s The Straits Times app.
The Straits Times is Singapore’s leading local news source which caters news to the young and old, savvy to the simple readers of the news. However, their interface was not user-friendly. After researching on their design and their competitors in the market like the BBC, Winno & Medium, the main points of improvements were rrganisation, navigation, and reading legibility.
In the process of redesigning the app, making it minimal and personalised were the two most defining factors. Older users needed to be able to understand how to use the app and grasp navigation easily, while younger users needed their dose of fine-tuned and curated content. Coloured tags, suggested content and dark mode support helped to achieve this.
Readers First
Understanding the target audience was of utmost importance and informed what needed to be changed. So, meet Lyla and Jo, who defined who ST’s readers are and what they need.
Wireframes helped to draft ideas, which went through rounds of feedback to transform the design from low to high fidelity.
